Supporting Your Child Through Exams: What to Expect and How to Help
As exams approach, it’s important for both students and parents to feel prepared and confident. Here are some ways you can support your child during this time and understand what’s expected of them.
Select each box for more information.
- Types of questions: Will there be multiple choice, short answer, essays, or practical tasks?
- Time limits: Help them practice under timed conditions to manage stress and stay on track during the exam.
- Content coverage: Make sure they understand which topics will be covered and encourage them to focus their revision on these areas.
- Minimize distractions: Turn off unnecessary devices and make sure the space is tidy.
- Set a routine: Regular study times with short breaks can help maintain focus without burnout.
- Encourage healthy habits: Sleep, nutrition, and physical activity are crucial during revision and exam periods.
- Attendance and punctuality: Ensure they arrive at the exam venue early and with all the necessary materials (e.g., pens, calculator, etc.).
- Behaviour and conduct: Exams are often timed and require focus and integrity. It’s important to remind them of the rules and expectations regarding cheating and distractions.
- Stay calm: Your child will take cues from your attitude, so staying positive and calm will help them feel more secure.
- Encourage breaks: Encourage them to take breaks to relax and recharge.
- Praise effort, not just results: Celebrate the hard work and effort they put in, regardless of the outcome.
